Congressman Tom Lantos, 1928-2008
The Leadership Council for Human Rights is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Congressman Tom Lantos, a tireless champion of human rights with a steadfast commitment to the promotion of freedom around the globe.
He served as the Founding Co-Chair of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, which he described as “Congress at its best. No lobbyists. No campaign contributions. Just a passionate movement on behalf of those who are downtrodden, who desperately need the help of Congress.”
The Congressman was a longtime friend of LCHR President Kathryn Cameron Porter, who worked closely with him to create the Caucus.
“During his outstanding tenure as a Member of Congress Tom did more than anyone to amplify the voices of the oppressed and shed light on injustices the world over. Those of us who were honored to know him feel a profound sadness. There is a hole in my heart,” she said. “His unwavering dedication will continue to be an inspiration to us all.”
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife Annette, his children, grandchildren and the rest of his family. |
