Leadership Council for Human Rights Announces Fellowship Program
The Leadership Council for Human Rights (LCHR) has created a summer fellowship program designed to provide deserving scholars with field experience in one LCHR’s countries of focus. The fellowship will allow the recipient to gain valuable cross-cultural experience, provide support to ongoing LCHR projects in the chosen country, and serve as a liaison between LCHR’s Washington office and its individual project sites. The fellow will acquire an in-depth understanding of on-the-ground realities and, most importantly, their contributions will positively impact the local communities in which they serve.
LCHR’s inaugural fellow is LaChelle Amos, who will work this summer in Iraqi Kurdistan. In addition to interning with LCHR during the spring 2007 semester, Ms. Amos is pursuing a master’s degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution at American University.
As part of her fellowship experience, Ms. Amos will concentrate on LCHR’s ongoing initiatives in the region. She will contribute to the publication of human rights newsletters promoting Iraqi women’s rights and cross-cultural exchange. Ms. Amos will also provide staff support for LCHR’s mobile library project, which currently makes books and human rights materials available to six underserved villages, educating women and youth on traditional democratic values, women’s rights, and civil society development. She will research and conduct interviews of Kurdish women regarding their significant contributions to a democratic society. Finally, she will provide research support for a proposed initiative on the “Treasures of Kurdistan” that aims to raise awareness of the region’s numerous archeologically significant sites in order to promote tourism and create local jobs. |
